Some corpses of persons believed to have been killed in the violence that erupted in Kaduna state were seen floating on River Kaduna yesterday.

The dead bodies were seen floating around the Unguwar Rimi axis of the river, which borders Kaduna North and Chikun Local Government Areas of the state.

A reliable eyewitness told Blueprint that he spotted some corpses floating on the river, and he believed they came from the  Malali axis.

He said: “I saw some dead bodies floating in the water… From what I saw, the corpses were likely thrown into the river.”

He added that there is a military check-point close to the area, and he cannot confirm whether the security agencies stationed there alerted the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on the need to  trace and recover the dead bodies,  considering the fact that some relations have been going to various mortuaries in search of their loved ones that have not returned home after the crisis.

All calls put across to the spokesperson of NEMA, Malam Yushau Shuaib, were unsuccessful as at the time of filing this report.

However, a source in the agency, who asked not to be named, said with the development, the agency would dispatch rescuers to the river side “and see if the bodies can be recovered.”

Meanwhile, several burials have been going on in Kaduna town as families continue to recover the dead bodies of their loved ones.
